Problem Statement

Individuals responsible for putting up holiday decorations are frustrated by the amount of planning, purchasing and time required and end result of their decorations. Planning and decorating feels more like a one person chore rather than a share holiday experience.

Hypothesis

By making the
pre-decorating/ planning process more visual, more communal, social and gameified it will result in more sales of Holiday decorations.

People’s moods temporarily affect their spending patterns. By making this experience more fun and encouraging it will positively affect the users spending.

DISCOVER AND DEFINE THROUGH USER RESEARCH

   Conducted Qualitative Interviews

Supporting Research- Demand trends for Holiday planning and installation services
are up 35% each year for the past 3 years.

The average cost for a planning and installation is
$800-$1,500
60 Million American homes purchase light and decoration istallation services and will
spend about 6.5 billion dollars each year on holiday decorations.

Based on my research, I was able to validate the concept and identify key user stories as well as gather user motivations, fears and needs.  Armed with this information, I began prioritizing the functionality and creating user flows.

FINDINGS

Average time to plan and install decorations is 3 hours

The week after Thanksgiving is the most popular time to start putting up outdoor Christmas decorations

The first time a homeowner decorates, their initial spend is on average $300

THE TOP 2 USER MOTIVATIONS

  Neighborhood or local attention

Spreading Holiday spirit for their children

BIGGEST FRUSTRATIONS FOR USERS

Lights not working and un-sorting decorations

Vandalism which also prevents from adding more decorations

Add 1 thing to display each year but pretty much keep the same decorations

SKETCHING AND WIRES

Using what I learned from the research I created 2 personas and began prioritization features. I then moved on to an iterative process of sketching starting with user flows and moving into lower fidelity wireframes. During this process I held test/critique sessions to understand usability with the low fidelity prototype.

USER TESTING USING
LEAN UX PRINCIPLES

Using the Invision prototype I conducted 2 rounds of remote user testing sessions with 6 participants each. After each round of testing I consolidated the findings and then iterated on the prototype.

FINAL DELIVERABLES

The final deliverables were all UI design files, a specification document that annotated all transitions/ animations and the functionality of the application as well as research findings.
